Greenwood Community Garden

Greenwood's community garden was launched in the spring of 2016 by Greenwood parent and PTO volunteer Sara Colvin Carpenter. With the support of many volunteers, the garden allows children from all grades to get dirty, explore the earth, and learn about an ecosystem, all while contributing to our initiative to grow and donate food locally.

Science Connections: Our teachers routinely work with experts from Green City Growers to connect garden activities to our students’ science curriculum. In the process, children across the grade levels learn about planting and maintaining vegetable plants.

Giving Back: Thanks to the hard work of staff and students, the garden flourishes with fresh produce all summer—and the Wakefield Food Pantry benefits from donations of lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant, basil, and tomatoes.

Environmental Benefits: Pollinator-friendly plants and flowers support butterflies, honeybees, and other helpful insects in our neighborhood, and the garden recently grew with a new sensory area. The garden reaps the rewards of students' commitment to composting in the lunchroom. Each spring, Black Earth Compost returns us bags of nutrient-rich compost to supplement our vegetable beds.

The Greenwood School Community Garden has been made possible by the help of passionate volunteers and staff, as well by funding from the Wakefield Educational Foundation (WEF) and The Savings Bank.

If you have any ideas for the garden or interest in helping out, please contact PTO Board. You also can follow garden activities at the Greenwood Community Garden Facebook page.
