From the Principal: 6/15/20

Dear Greenwood Families,

Believe it or not, we are looking at the last three days of the 2019-2020 school year!  While none of us could ever have predicted what this year brought us, it was a reminder of the power that exists in having a strong and caring school community.  My hope, more than anything, is that Greenwood families felt connected, engaged, and supported during a time that necessitated physical and social distancing in a way that none of us had experienced before.  Whether through videos, emails, Zoom meetings, Google Docs, phone calls, texts, or even letters in the mail, we all found ways to create a temporary “new school normal” and do what we love to do best—be there for children.  Thank you so much for your partnership and support throughout!

Student Belongings

It was wonderful to see so many of you last Thursday during the pick up time for student belongings!  (And we really lucked out—the pouring rain started 16 minutes after we wrapped up!!)  While we returned the majority of items, there are still some bags left in the gym.  If your child is in 4th grade, we will have your items (along with any sibling items) at the Grade 4 Drive-Through Moving On this Tuesday.  For everyone else, if you’d like to pick up items before summer, I am available by appointment on Monday between 9:00-10:30am or on Tuesday/Wednesday between 8:00-9:30am.  Please let me know!

Whole-School Car Parade

The Greenwood staff really wanted to find a way for a “live” goodbye to our Gators before they head off into summer, so we are having a parade!  However, in this parade, families will drive by and Greenwood staff members will be out waving and cheering (in a socially-distanced manner!) as everyone passes.

  • Date: Wednesday, June 17th.

  • The Greenwood parade begins at 10:00am.

  • There are staggered "start times" based on grade level in order to avoid traffic backups.  If you have children in multiple grades, pick the time that works best for your family.  The Greenwood staff is planning on being present for the entire time, so you won’t “miss” someone if you choose one time slot over another.  However, if you have a 4th grader, please do try to come at 11:30am so we can give them a big send-off!

    • Kindergarten @ 10:00am

    • 1st Grade @ 10:20am

    • 2nd Grade @ 10:40am

    • 3rd Grade @ 11:00am

    • 4th Grade @ 11:30am

  • Cars proceed down Greenwood Avenue from Main Street/Pitman Avenue toward Oak Street without stopping.  Driving extra-slowly is encouraged for maximum wave time!

  • All families must be in cars and are not allowed to stop.

This plan has been shared with the WPS Director of Facilities, Wakefield Police & Fire, the Wakefield Board of Health, and the Director of Wakefield Emergency Management.  All four elementary schools will each have their own “rolling rally” to wrap up this unusual school year!

Grade 4 Virtual Art Show

Mrs. Drago has created a short virtual art show using artwork from our 4th graders shared on Artsonia.  Take a moment to check out their work!

Wakefield Summer Reading

Mrs. Buckley and the rest of the Wakefield elementary school librarians have been working with the Beebe Library to organize this year’s summer reading lists for families.  Check out this flyer for more information!

Weekly Theme

We are down to the letters X, Y, and Z for the ABC Countdown!  Follow the Greenwood School Instagram and/or Facebook accounts (@wpsgreenwood) to see the daily videos!

Let’s have a wonderful last week of school, an amazing summer, and please know that no matter what the fall brings, we will always have our students as our #1 priority throughout our planning.  As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need support.

Take care,

Tiffany
