From the Principal: 5/22/23

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  On Friday afternoon Greenwood students had a visit from one of the founders of Black Earth Compost, Justin Sandler.  He spoke about what happens to the food scraps collected during Greenwood lunches in the process of becoming usable compost.  Kids had a lot of great questions for him, and we’re thrilled to have this program well up and running here!

Grades 3 & 4 - MCAS Testing This Week

One more round!  MCAS testing for Math in grades 3 & 4 will take place on Monday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 23rd.  Testing begins at the start of the school day.  The recommended testing time for each session is 90 minutes, but students will have as much time as they need to complete the test.  Children who are absent or significantly tardy on the day of testing will take that day’s session during a makeup time on a different day.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

No School - Monday, May 29th

Next Monday, May 29th is Memorial Day.  All WPS offices and schools will be closed in observance.

Greenwood End of Year Dates

I will definitely sound like a broken record by the time all is said and done, but I want to make sure I do everything possible to be clear about the schedule for the end of the school year here at Greenwood.  Because we had an unexpected closure day for sewer issues, all of our “last days” will take place one day later than the rest of the district.  To that end…

  • Tuesday, 6/20 - Last day for Greenwood Kindergarten - Early Release for K only

  • Wednesday, 6/21 - Greenwood Incoming Kindergarten Screening and Full School Day for Grades 1-4

  • Thursday, 6/22 - Last day for Greenwood 1st-4th Grades - Early Release

Greenwood June Lunch Menu

Directly related to the previous blurb…Greenwood has an adjusted June lunch menu from WPS Food Services to accommodate the additional school day.  We will continue to share this as well!

Food Rescue Program - Volunteer Drivers Needed

Our lunchtime composting and food rescue programs are going strong!  However, we could use some help in getting the food donations picked up at Greenwood and delivered to the designated locations in Wakefield, Stoneham, or Melrose.  Food pickup can be done anytime after 1:30pm on a selected date.  Please visit the link below for more information and to sign up.  Thanks in advance!

Lunchroom Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has given us some of your valuable time over the past few weeks!  Updated time slots are being added at the current link and now go through THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!

Do you have any free time between 12:00-1:15pm on school days?  Or 10:30-11:50am on early release days?  Looking for a way to help out at Greenwood?  We are finally bringing back lunchroom volunteer opportunities!  If you’d like to come in and help support students while they’re eating lunch, please see the linked Sign-Up Genius to select time slots over the next two weeks.  Single days, multiple days, one time slot, the whole lunch block…we welcome any and all helpers!

As an FYI, we will be incorporating our lunchroom volunteers into the food rescue/composting program work.  Don’t worry…it’s easy!

NOTE: You will need to have a CORI form completed before coming in for any lunch shifts - please contact Ms. Paiva about the process or to check if you have a current one on file
