From the Principal: 5/8/23

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone who was able to make it to the Greenwood Spring Dance on Friday night had a wonderful time.  It was very nice of the sun to make an appearance as everyone left school on Friday as well - we were starting to forget what it looked like!  We have another week packed with interesting events, from Monday morning’s All School Meeting to Wednesday afternoon’s Spring Book Fair to Thursday evening’s STEAM Night.  Looking forward to seeing many families there!

“Principal for the Day” Announcement

In case you missed the email on Friday afternoon…our top student fundraiser for the Gator Gallop, 4th grader Eloise, is going to be Greenwood's "Principal for the Day" on Monday, May 8th.  She has decided to make Monday a schoolwide pajama day as a special treat.  (There may also be some extra recess involved, which will be a popular move!)

All-School Meeting - Kindergarten

One last reminder about the All-School Meeting on Monday, May 8th at 9:00am.  Kindergarten families are welcome to come and watch their children teach everyone about “empathy” with the rest of the school.  Seating for families will be in the balcony.

Early Release Day - Wednesday, May 10th

Our next early release day for students is on Wednesday, May 10th..  All students will be dismissed at 11:55am in order for teachers to have professional learning sessions during the afternoon.  Please note: there will be a scheduled lunch block for students prior to dismissal.

Optional Class Placement Survey - Reminder

Just a reminder that if you intend to submit the optional class placement survey for students currently in grades K-3, we are asking for any input to be provided no later than Friday, May 12th.

STEAM Night - This Week!

STEAM Night is back!  This year it will take place on Thursday, May 11th from 5:30-7:00pm at the Galvin.  This interactive elementary math and science showcase will feature hands-on experiences from iRobot, Lark Studio, Curious Creatures, and Spot the Robot Dog, along with many offerings from WPS staff members and PTO groups.  It’s sure to be a good time!

From the Wakefield Human Rights Commission - Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month

The Wakefield Human Rights Commission (WHRC) will present its annual celebration of the diversity of AAPI culture on Saturday, May 27, from 1 – 4 p.m., at the Americal Civic Center in Wakefield. A full afternoon of performances, interactive demonstrations and crafts is planned: Chinese Lion Dance, Diablo Yo-Yo, henna tattoo art, Muay Thai Martial Arts, Bollywood and Nepalese Dance, calligraphy, origami, Korean sweets and more. The event is free to all.  Please see this press release for more information.

Food Rescue Program - Volunteer Drivers Needed

Our lunchtime composting and food rescue programs are going strong!  However, we could use some help in getting the food donations picked up at Greenwood and delivered to the designated locations in Wakefield, Stoneham, or Melrose.  Food pickup can be done anytime after 1:30pm on a selected date.  Please visit the link below for more information and to sign up.  Thanks in advance!

Lunchroom Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has given us some of your valuable time over the past few weeks!  Updated time slots are being added at the current link and now go through THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!

Do you have any free time between 12:00-1:15pm on school days?  Or 10:30-11:50am on early release days?  Looking for a way to help out at Greenwood?  We are finally bringing back lunchroom volunteer opportunities!  If you’d like to come in and help support students while they’re eating lunch, please see the linked Sign-Up Genius to select time slots over the next two weeks.  Single days, multiple days, one time slot, the whole lunch block…we welcome any and all helpers!

As an FYI, we will be incorporating our lunchroom volunteers into the food rescue/composting program work.  Don’t worry…it’s easy!

NOTE: You will need to have a CORI form completed before coming in for any lunch shifts - please contact Ms. Paiva about the process or to check if you have a current one on file
