From the Principal: 6/5/23

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  We had some special visitors here at Greenwood on Friday…the 2023 WMHS Seniors who were part of the Greenwood 4th grade class of 2015!

This is such a fun tradition for not only the graduating seniors, but also for the current Gators who will be standing in that spot someday!

Greenwood Field Day

Keep those “no rain” thoughts coming!  Greenwood’s Field Day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6th starting at 12:00pm.  (Students will be able to access school lunch in the cafeteria as normal…but there’s a special treat at the end of the afternoon!)  Our entire Gator community is looking forward to a fun afternoon of games and activities thanks to the HUGE efforts of our PTO Field Day Committee and all of the adult volunteers.  We can’t wait!

Early Release - Wednesday, June 7th

We have one more Wednesday early release day for students on Wednesday, June 7th.  All students will be dismissed at 11:55am in order for teachers to have professional learning sessions during the afternoon.  Please note: there will be a scheduled lunch block for students prior to dismissal.

BSU Juneteenth Celebration

On Thursday, June 15th, Wakefield Memorial High School’s Black Student Union is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration at Lake Quannapowitt from 2:30-5:30pm.  Bring a blanket and some snacks - come and enjoy music, games, and live performances!  At 6:00pm, there will be a Flag Raising hosted by the Wakefield Human Rights Commission at the Americal Civic Center.

Report Cards - FYI

We’re still a little ways out, but in case you were wondering - report cards will again be printed and sent home with students on their last day of school.  That’s Tuesday, June 20th for Kindergarten and Thursday, June 22nd for Grades 1-4.

Jiji’s “Summer of Math” - ST Math

This summer, all Wakefield elementary schools are excited to participate in Jiji’s Summer of Math!  The ST Math team created some resources for continued summer math learning; we are excited to share them with you - there are two options here to meet different needs and preferences.

Our goal this summer is to have students keep learning math - whether that be by playing math games, continuing with ST Math, or both! The “unplugged” option has weekly games that can be played with just playing cards. Alternatively, students can opt to continue playing ST Math, with a goal of 75 minutes per week. Students can play ST Math fairly independently - whenever it works best for your schedule - and we’ve included helpful prompts as well as the phone number for ST Math’s support line! We hope you will pick one of the two options in the attached document for your student(s) this summer. They can return the tracker for either option to their teacher in the fall to earn a penguin prize!

Here is the information on both options: Summer of Math Overview for Families 2023. All necessary materials are linked in that document, and we’ll be sending home a hard copy of the overview and both trackers with students before the end of the year.  Please reach out with any questions!

Food Rescue Program - Volunteer Drivers Needed

Our lunchtime composting and food rescue programs are going strong!  However, we could use some help in getting the food donations picked up at Greenwood and delivered to the designated locations in Wakefield, Stoneham, or Melrose.  Food pickup can be done anytime after 1:30pm on a selected date.  Please visit the link below for more information and to sign up.  Thanks in advance!

Lunchroom Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who has given us some of your valuable time over the past few weeks!  Updated time slots are being added at the current link and now go through THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!

Do you have any free time between 12:00-1:15pm on school days?  Or 10:30-11:50am on early release days?  Looking for a way to help out at Greenwood?  We are finally bringing back lunchroom volunteer opportunities!  If you’d like to come in and help support students while they’re eating lunch, please see the linked Sign-Up Genius to select time slots over the next two weeks.  Single days, multiple days, one time slot, the whole lunch block…we welcome any and all helpers!

As an FYI, we will be incorporating our lunchroom volunteers into the food rescue/composting program work.  Don’t worry…it’s easy!

NOTE: You will need to have a CORI form completed before coming in for any lunch shifts - please contact Ms. Paiva about the process or to check if you have a current one on file
