From the Principal: 11/2/20

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  So last week I was running through piles of crunchy leaves...and this week I was running through snow and skidding on ice?  Even though I’ve lived in New England my entire life and am not unfamiliar with trick-or-treating while wearing a giant winter coat under my costume, I don’t know if any of us were quite ready for the “coating to 1 inch” we got on Friday.  Never a dull moment!

Grades 3 & 4 - iReady Diagnostic Update

Thank you for your support with iReady testing at home this week!  We were so impressed with our students' hard work. We will be in touch next week with makeup times for students who missed their test session, as well as with additional times for students who need to finish the assessment.  More information will also be forthcoming about iReady student reports and how the diagnostic is utilized to plan instruction.

Parking Lot Safety

In order to keep everyone safe during a busy time of day, please do not use the back parking lot as a “cut-through” for foot traffic or a drop-off area for cars during arrival and dismissal.  Cars must stay on Greenwood Avenue and drop off along the sidewalk, and walkers should remain on the sidewalk until you reach the entrance near the crosswalk/playground.  Thanks for your help with this!

No School - Tuesday, November 3rd

Just a reminder that there is no school for students on Tuesday, November 3rd, as noted on the district calendar.  All WPS staff members will be participating in professional development workshops for the full day, so there will be no live online activities for students.

Curriculum Night

Greenwood’s Virtual Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, November 5th.  The goal of the evening is to provide an opportunity for parents/guardians to hear a grade-level curriculum overview, learn about classroom routines and procedures, and have the chance to ask the classroom teacher general questions.  While we are still working out some of the logistics of the evening, here is an overview:

  • The overall time frame will be from 6:30-8:00pm on Thursday, November 5th.

  • Classroom teachers will schedule 30-minute live Zoom sessions for their class to present a curriculum overview and answer questions.

    • Kindergarten - 6:30-7:00pm

    • Grades 1 & 2 - 7:00-7:30pm

    • Grades 3 & 4 - 7:30-8:00pm

  • “Drop-in sessions” via Zoom will be on the schedule for families who may wish to touch base with non-classroom staff members.

A complete schedule with Zoom links will be sent out via School Messenger on Wednesday.

WPS Parent University Session - Digital Curriculum Resources

Do you have questions about ST Math, Lexia, or RAZ-Plus?  The Elementary Literacy Coaches and STEM Coordinator hosted a Parent University session last week about this very topic!  In order to share out information with as many families as possible, they are providing a video of their presentation as well as a copy of their slide deck.  Please feel free to reach out with additional questions!

Grab & Go Lunch Sign Up - November 2020

It has been great to see so many students participating in the lunch program!  As a reminder, a federal funding grant is providing free school lunches for any student for the entire 20-21 school year.

It is very important that we have accurate numbers for how many lunches we will need on a given day, as meals are prepared off-site and delivered to Greenwood prior to AM cohort dismissal each day.  This means the survey will close on SUNDAY night for the week.  Please contact Ms. Paiva or me directly if your child is in need of a lunch and the survey has closed.

A Note from Mrs. Doherty

If you have not yet done so, please have your child vaccinated for the flu and provide me with documentation of the vaccine by December 31st.  (Please refer to the link below.)

New Immunization Requirement from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health

You can fax it to me at 781-224-5082, or email it to: mary.doherty@wpsk12.org. (A photo of the document is fine).

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Mary Doherty, R.N.

Greenwood School Council

Every school in Massachusetts is required, by statute, to have a school council made up of parents and teachers that serves as an advisory board to the principal.  Members serve a two-year term, with open slots filled by an election that is facilitated by the Greenwood PTO.  This is just a heads up that we have one parent slot available for this year, due to a term ending.  More information about self-nomination and next steps will be coming out soon.

Technology Support

Please email the WPS Tech Department at technology@wpsk12.org if your child is in need of technology support while at home.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with questions.  Thank you for everything you do to support your children and their learning!
