Authorfest Spotlight: Scott Magoon

AuthorFest welcomes author/illustrator Scott Magoon, visiting our Greenwood first graders on Tuesday, March 19.

A native New Englandah, Scott has been writing and illustrating books for young readers since 2003. Scott loves putting words and pictures together for kids. As a young reader himself in the 1970s, he likes to remind himself what it was like to experience books as a child. Some of Scott’s books are edgy, others are funny, others take on serious topics difficult to face. But all of them have a singular core message: hope that all will be well.

Some of Scott’s most recently published books include:

  • Misunderstood Shark: Friends Don’t Eat Friends: The hilarious follow-up to Misunderstood Shark by New York Times bestselling duo Amy Dyckman and Scott Magoon, it tackles what it really means to be a good friend.

  • Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship: Based on the real-life partnership between Boston marathon bombing survivor Jessica Kensky and her service dog Rescue, it is the heartening story of love and teamwork between a girl and her service dog. A 2019 Schneider Family Book Award Winner.

Scott is also the author-illustrator of:

  • Breathe, a Kirkus Reviews Best Read Aloud, a Huffington Post Best Book of 2014, and Chicago Public Library Best Book of 2014

  • The Boy Who Cried Bigfoot, which Kirkus Reviews called, “Entertaining and clever—and that’s no lie.”

Among the many books he has illustrated are:

  • Spoon and Chopsticks, both by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

  • And in 2016, Greenwood students helped him brainstorm illustration ideas for his book I Have A Balloon.
