From the Principal: 2/3/20

Dear Greenwood Families,

Happy Monday!  Last year I was worried about making Super Bowl predictions and jinxing things...but this year I’m not nearly as invested.  Let’s just say this: I hope the team you’re rooting for wins! Oh, and I hope that the groundhog didn’t see his shadow...

Global School Play Day

In 2015, a group of educators started a grassroots movement to find opportunities to incorporate time for unstructured play for kids.  Each year, on the first Wednesday of February, participating classrooms and schools purposefully set aside some time for students to interact with each other through play.  Greenwood is once again going to join in on the fun! Individual classrooms will determine their schedules, but the one thing that will look the same for all classes is NO SCREENS during that time.  Ask your children on Wednesday afternoon how it went!

Spare Change Drive for Puerto Rico

More information to come about this in next week’s Gator Tales!  The 4th Grade is organizing a school-wide drive to collect spare change to help with earthquake relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Members of the Fourth Grade Leadership Team will share information with classrooms later this week, but we wanted families to have a heads up.

Wakefield STEAM Night—Save the Date!

Greenwood had its Science Fair in January, but Wakefield will host STEAM Night in March!  On Thursday, March 12th from 6-8 pm, the WPS STEAM Task Force will host the third annual STEAM Night.  STEAM Night 2020 will be an opportunity for educators and professionals from science, technology, engineering, art and math to share their passion for STEAM through interactive demonstrations. The fair will partner high school students and STEAM professionals to offer a variety of hands-on STEAM activities for Wakefield students and their families. This event is free and open to all Wakefield residents. The event this year is sponsored by Wakefield Educational Foundation (WEF), The Savings Bank, Wakefield Co-operative Bank, Wakefield Rotary Club, Valid8, and Hack Wakefield. Visit their website to learn more, wpssteam.weebly.com.

Wakefield Community Mental Health Forum—Another Save the Date!

Please check out the linked flyer for the 5th annual Wakefield Community Mental Health Forum on April 1st.  They have booked an incredible speaker this year: Dr. Stuart Ablon from Think:Kids at MGH.  If you are interested in hearing about how families, teachers, and kids can work together to resolve conflicts using the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) approach.

Thank you for everything you do to support your children and their learning—let’s have a great week!
